5 Places That Will Make You Appreciate Food

If you are a foodie like I am, one of the first things you research when planning a trip is the local cuisine of your destination.  Food is an important piece of any country’s cultural background and trying it is part of having a truly immersive experience. If you are having trouble deciding where to go on your next trip, feast your eyes on these top notch delicious treats across the globe for some destination inspiration. My apologies if you’re reading this with an appetite.

Pasta, pizza, gelato and mozzarella!? Is there anything else you need? (Disclaimer: this is not nutritional advice.) As a food capital of the world, all Italians seem to have a passion for food that rivals even the most dedicated foodie. Each region in Italy is known for something unique, so be sure to pop into local hole-in-the-wall restaurants while you’re on tour.

Insider’s tip – Lunch time recommendations:

  • For the best ravioli try Agata e Romeo in Rome. Here, a husband and wife team work together to create traditional fine cuisine.
  • Don’t worry, I didn’t forget about pizza. When in Venice, don’t miss the opportunity to try one of Natico Forno’s wood-fired pizza slices.
  • Years ago Italians woke up feeling inspired and created Gelato. Don’t forget to top off your meal with some Gelato for desert! When in Florence, try Gelateria La Carraia.

Cheese. Let’s talk about cheese. Forget about Brie and Camembert – with over 400 distinct types, every region in France specializes in different flavors of cheese.

Insider’s tip – Where to find cheese:

  • For one of the best cheese shops in Paris, try Fromagerie Laurent Dubois, where you can find just about any type of cheese you’ve ever wanted to try.

France Food

Compared to European countries, Brazil is often underrated in the food department. Brazil was colonized by the Portuguese and later populated through immigration from Italy, Germany, Spain, Japan and other nationalities. As a result, you can find diverse and tasty cuisine throughout the country. You’ve probably been to a Brazilian steakhouse once or twice in your life, but don’t be fooled; it gets so much better than that!

Insider’s tip – Must-try Brazilian treats:

  • Pao de Queijo – Brazilian cheese bread
  • Brigadeiros – chocolate fudge balls
  • Coxinha – chicken croquettes
  • Pastel de Queijo/Pastel de Belem – Cheese empanadas/ Portuguese custard tart
  • Acai – super fruit smoothie bowl
  • Picanha – a popular cut of beef

For all those with a sweet tooth who plan on making a visit to this European gem, get ready to try some of the best chocolate in the world. From Neuhouse and Leonidas to arguably the most delicious Linge waffle you will ever try, Belgium has it covered in the desert department.

Insider’s tip – Navigating the desert menu:

  • When ordering desert, make sure the traditional Belgium cookie, Speculoos, is somehow involved. Sorry for the sugar rush.

However, whether you live a vegan lifestyle or not, you will be enchanted by the quality and quantity of fresh fruits and light, yet spicy dishes available.
