Learn the Lingo: An App Guide

So, you’re going abroad soon but aren’t fluent in country’s official language. You worry you won’t be able to communicate. Well, thanks to modern technology, language barriers are becoming few and far between. With the help of your phone and a few minutes of your time, you’ll be speaking like a local in no time!

Here are some of the best language apps to try:

Duolingo: Designed with a game-type feel, you can learn 23 languages for free! Lessons are designed to take about 10-15 minutes each, perfect for your pre-tour days, commutes, or even as an in class break for your students. It’s easy to see why this is the largest and most popular language learning app on the market.

Memrise: Learning is fun with Memrise! With their interactive, game-like interface you’ll hardly notice the knowledge you’re gaining. You can customize how many words and what topics you want to learn and how long you want each session to be. Lessons are built around key communication events so you’ll be navigating your way around Spain and ordering paella before you know it!

Busuu: If you want to learn some local slang, improve your idiomatic vocabulary or just practice, then this is the app for you! As the “world’s largest social network for language learning,” Busuu pairs online courses with active communication. They’ll connect you with a native speaker of the language you are learning (pen pal style) where you can learn tips and chat in real time. They also offer mini “travel courses”, where you can learn some quick vocab before going abroad!
