Four of the world’s most haunted castles

While some have doubts about the paranormal, there are tons of theories about ghosts and goblins that exist all around the world. During this time of year, in preparation for Halloween, inhibitions seem to vanish when it comes to investigating the allegedly haunted places that lurk among us. If you’re a brave soul looking for some frightful fun, these four haunted castles will be a thrill for you. (The rest of us will just cower in fear.)

The Tower of London, England
Once home to Britain’s royal family, it’s impossible to know just how many were hung and beheaded on the grounds of the Tower of London. Of course, the most famous beheading was that of Anne Boleyn, who was sentenced to death by Henry VIII after failing to produce a male heir to the throne. Another one of Henry VIII’s victims managed to run from death before being caught and beheaded. Since then, many visitors have claimed to see a headless ghost floating through the tower. It’s been said that at night not even a dog will enter the Salt Tower, where Boleyn was beheaded.

Bhangarh Castle, India
Located in the hills of India, this haunted castle is thought to be so otherworldly that visitors are not allowed after sunset. Even government officials associated with the landmark choose to keep their distance. In fear of being attacked by a ghost, their offices are located away from the haunted castle. According to legend, the castle was cursed by Guru Balu Nath after his heart was broken by a woman in a nearby town. After the curse was placed on the castle, the city endured both war and famine.

Edinburgh Castle, Scotland
Edinburgh Castle has been home to the Scottish Royal Family since the 12th century. One of the many strange personalities to inhabit the castle was Lady Janet Douglas, who was accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake. In 2001, an official paranormal investigation was conducted. Both the investigators and the public have reported an unseen presence tugging on their clothing and various apparitions including a headless drummer, a piper, and a dog wandering around a pet cemetery.

Leap Castle, Ireland
Hauntings here date back as far as the mid-1500s when the chapel priest was stabbed mid-ceremony by his crazed brother. Another source for the phantoms could be the spiked shaft in the back of the chapel that opposing enemies were thrown onto. Over 20 spirits have been reported, the most horrifying of which is the Elemental, a hunched creature with a decaying face.
