Have you ever wondered what it might be like to walk around the ancient Roman roads? Well, a research project titled “Rome Reborn” is giving modern-day explorers the chance to step into the gladiator sandals of those who once lived in this magnificent city. Kahn Academy has joined forces with the “Rome Reborn” team to create a 3D model of the city during its peak in 320 AD. Picture the satellite setting of Google Maps, if Google Maps existed during a time when communal bathrooms were still a thing.
Rome Reborn allows spectators to virtually interact with the intricate and technologically advanced structures that once populated the city. Since 1997, historians and scientists have been working to create accurate visualizations of the Colosseum, the Pantheon and everything in between. While the 3D program will primarily display ancient Roma at its peak, users will be able to travel through time with a single click of a mouse. “Rome Reborn” exhibits a digital evolution, depicting the development of the city from its early stages in the Bronze Age (1000 BC) to its downfall in the Middle Ages (550 AD).
To this very day, it is difficult for people to fathom the complexity of this ancient society. The architecture, technology and infrastructure of Rome in 320 AD exceeded what seemed to be possible at the time. Check out this video to catch a glimpse of ancient Rome in all its glory!
