Teachers and students traveling with EF Educational Tours often venture west of London to visit one of the world’s most ancient and mysterious monuments – Stonehenge. Archaeologists believe that the Stonehenge was built sometime between 3000 and 2000 BC., and is one of the most famous stone circle monuments found throughout the British Isles. While speculation on why the Stonehenge was constructed still exists, one of the more common beliefs is that the structure was built as an ancient astronomical observatory to track celestial events such as a solstice, equinox, or eclipse. The Stonehenge Avenue aligns with the midwinter sunset and midsummer sunrise; possibly indicating that the Stonehenge was also used to understand the changing of the seasons.
