Did that earlobe catch your eye? Maybe that’s because each of the facial features in our “Give me five (senses)” story belong to someone famous. For inspiration, artist and designer Clary Huang asked colleagues about their favorite celebrities—and threw in a few ideas of her own.
What about the hand, you ask? Even though A-list celebrities brought this montage to life, the real heavy lifting came via Clary’s quick wit and nimble fingers—all five of which are featured, as a sort of single-handed self-portrait. (And, the reality is, it’s hard to find celebrity hands to sketch, explains Clary.)
Clary, along with other talented designers on the team, handle the EF Journal’s visual appeal, including all the custom illustrations that grace our pages. Whether it’s the Ryan Gosling-shaped ice cream cone from Issue No. 3, or a square jelly donut from our latest Best Day Ever story, Clary’s art often features her whimsical take on everyday objects. It’s no wonder she compares her style to “a warm brownie sundae.”
So, what’s next for Clary? Well, she’s hard at work on the next Journal, but she hopes to someday sketch all of the contributors, artists, and editors involved so that our readers can put a face to the bylines.
